Urban Residential

Kevin McKee March 3, 2016

As cities continue to need more dense urban residential developments its important to maintain a sense of place for those living there. A sustainable design that embraces the unique qualities of the neighborhood and provides public spaces that feel safe and have quality materials and incorporates art and landscaping to add to the public realm.

In our drastically challenging environment it has become more important to create private outdoor spaces for individual residences that provide air and sunshine throughout the year. The designs must also weigh the difficulty of utilizing elevators and parking structures so that they can be accessed without fear of threats to personal safety and health. Less density and more elevator banks may become the norm to lessen the demand loads and maintain separation.

Another concept to lower density is to create more blank floors open to the sky in larger developments. Private gardens and patios accessible to the residence only. Some units could also have roof top decks in this scenario. More air and light. Costs become more of an issue since amortizing over fewer units. There is a mix possible.
